Protect your vehicle from floods, storms & extreme weather damages in Malaysia. Learn how Etiqa’s complete coverage add-on can help.

The current cycle of human-driven climate change is causing significant impact to our planet, especially through the rise of extreme weather events. While the world’s climate is technically always changing, it usually occurs very slowly over several hundred years in cycles of 100,000 years or so.[1] In the last 200 years however, CO2 levels in our atmosphere have increased by more than 40%, most of it occurring within the last 50 years![1] Our average global temperature has also risen by about 1.2°C, which may not seem like very much, but contributes significantly to melting polar ice caps, rising sea levels, intense heatwaves, declining biodiversity[2] and the unpredictable extreme weather we are facing globally.

Malaysia, too, has been experiencing the effects of climate change. Our average surface air temperature has risen from 25.8°C in 1901 to 26.8°C in 2023, and even though we are receiving increased rainfall of 3107mm in 2023 compared to 2703mm in 1901[3], we are also experiencing prolonged droughts, heatwaves and disrupted monsoon seasons. While our tropical climate and geographic location means we are prone to extreme weather on a regular basis, climate change is exacerbating the situation. In April 2024, a level 1 hot weather warning was issued across 10 regions after temperatures remained above 35°C for three consecutive days.[4] Months later in November, heavy rainfall caused flooding across nine states, displacing 40,922 families.[5]

Extreme weather and its effects on you

Extreme weather affects our everyday lives in many ways, and we don’t mean needing to go out with an umbrella everyday either. Our cyclical weather of scorching heat to pouring rain makes us more vulnerable to heat strokes and flu, while higher than usual temperatures are causing spikes in our electricity bills due to extra air conditioning – adding on to our living expenses. Extreme weather also impacts our food supply, and not forgetting an increase in severe turbulence during flights – remember that Singapore Airlines incident in May 2024?[6]

Another common outcome of extreme weather in Malaysia is getting our car caught in a flood or finding a tree crushing our vehicle after a powerful storm, causing millions of dollars in damages to vehicles every year. According to the Department of Statistics Malaysia, floods caused RM933.4 million in damages in 2024, with vehicles costing RM17.1 million in flood-related damages.[7] Between 1 January 2020 to 31 August 2024, flood-related claims (vehicular and non-vehicular) incurred by Etiqa customers came up to RM436,709,003, while 30,562 customers were affected by floods.

Nine ways to protect your vehicle from extreme weather

The extreme weather situation in Malaysia is not expected to improve any time soon, but we can always take proactive measures to minimise its effects on our vehicles, and our finances.

Park your car in a secure and covered location, avoiding construction sites and steep slopes. Remember: underground carparks are prone to floods.

If parking by the roadside is unavoidable, face your wheels towards the curb to minimise movement and causing further damage.

Avoid driving out during strong hurricanes and thunderstorms. Visibility will be poor, the roads will be treacherous, and flash floods can occur suddenly.

Don’t drive through a flood. The water could be hiding debris, potholes or sinkholes, which could damage your vehicle and endanger your safety.

Watch out for weather notices when driving. Pay attention to roadside signs or use a flood alert system. Pull over if you have to.

Keep your vehicle covered, especially when not in use. It can help reduce the risk of scratches and minor damages during extreme weather.

Ensure your tires are in good condition. Worn out tires will not give you the traction you need when roads get slippery.

Ensure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit, and keep it somewhere accessible. You may need to use it.

Ensure your vehicle protection includes coverage for extreme weather-related damages.

Why you need more than conventional vehicle coverage

In order to renew one’s road tax and ensure your vehicle is legal to drive on Malaysian roads, the Road Transport Department (officially known as Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan/JPJ) requires all vehicles to have car insurance or takaful coverage. These plans usually provide coverage for accident-related damages and theft, but damages caused by extreme weather are often not included.
