Professor Dato’ Dr Ahmad Hidayat Buang (Prof Dato’ Ahmad Hidayat) is currently Honorary Professor at Shariah and Law Department, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, specialising in Islamic law of transactions and property, contemporary issues of fatwa and Shariah courts in Malaysia.
Prof Dato’ Ahmad Hidayat studied at University of Malaya and received Bachelor in Shariah (Islamic Law) (first class honours) in 1987. Later, went to London to receive further training at School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London and obtained LL.M in 1989 and PhD in 1996. He then served with University of Malaya as lecturer from 1987 until retirement in September 2022. He has written and presented articles and papers in journals and conferences both locally and internationally and recipient of research grants such as IRPA from MOSTI (Government of Malaysia), Toyota Foundation, Fundamental Research Grant from Ministry of Higher Education and SOAS Additional Award for Fieldwork.
Prof Dato’ Ahmad Hidayat also served as consultant and adviser on Shariah matters to several Banks and financial institutions in Malaysia and Singapore; formerly served as Chairman and member of BIMB’s Shariah Supervisory Council from 2011-2023 and MNRB’s Shariah Group Committee Chairman and member from 2004-2021; currently served as ARB’s Shariah Advisory Council Chairman and HSBC Amanah Shariah Committee member; a qualified Shariah Legal Counsel in the Federal Territory Shariah Courts from 1999-2021 and accredited mediator from Australian Accord Group and Certified Shariah Advisor from ASAS; and appointed as visiting lecturer and scholar in New Zealand (2001), UK (2005), USA (2011), Turkiye (2016), Japan (2016) and Indonesia (2016).
He is also former Head of Shariah and Law Department from 1997-1999 and 2016-2018, Deputy Director for Development, Academy of Islamic Studies 2005-2006 and Director of Academy of Islamic Studies 2006-2011 and involved in curricula development, designing and monitoring of Islamic Shariah Higher Degrees at University and national level as member of the national accreditation committee of Malaysia Qualification Agency (MQA) (2010-2019), MQA member of Program Standard for Law and Shariah Law (2014) and member of the University Malaya Senate 2006-2011 and 2015-2021.
Prof Dato’ Ahmad Hidayat conferred by His Majesty the Sultan of Kedah DSDK in conjunction of His Highness 88th birthday on 17th January 2016.
